A small number of children are in still school and we would like to share some of what they have been doing! They have called themselves the 'Free Arena'!
Monday 1st to Friday 5th June
Another busy week which started with a change of classroom and finished with another change of classroom. This is the last week we will all be together as from next week there will be three groups. This week, in addition to writing about Zahra and using Get Epic, My Maths, TT Rockstars, Numbots and Phonics Play, the children did activities that were linked to our whole school theme of Around the World. Each day we have been strengthening our bodies doing a 'Kids Daily Workout'. This was a new way to workout and we all enjoyed it, including Mrs Smith and Miss Stewart. We made flags to represent ourselves, made dot paintings like indigenous Australian Aborigines and made African masks. We also practised our cutting skills and made a group of potato people. Mrs Smith introduced us to Hama beads which encouraged us to be very precise and controlled with our fingers and kept us very busy.
Monday 18th - Friday 22nd May
We made dragon flies today and hung them from the trees in the wooded area. They look amazing. We also tried doing happa zome which is the Japanese art of making pictures with leaves and flowers. It involves bashing them with a rubber mallet. Great fun!
On this lovely sunny day we made sun catchers to hang on the trees. This afternoon we had a go at some sports and played a shady game of charades.
We stayed cool painting stone bugs and collecting materials for our bug hotel. The bugs will have somewhere to move into tomorrow.
We made our bug hotel and soon had some paying guests. The guardians of the forest that we made, will protect them all.
We finished our week by making flying birds and feeders to hang up in the woods.
Monday 11th - Friday 15th May
The children have had another busy week in school. As well as completing the Get Epic quizzes, My Maths tasks, Times Table Rock Stars and the school writing task, they've completed 5 different themed days.
Monday - LEGO Day
Everyone enjoyed bringing Lego characters to life using the Yakit Kids app and then had their own box of LEGO each to try some LEGO challenges.
Tuesday - Marble day
We made marble mazes and giant marble runs out of recycling, some working in sibling pairs.
Wednesday - Spy Training:
We learnt how to use semaphore flags, after making our own, decoded some Morse Code messages and learnt how to make invisible writing visible.
Thursday - Volcano day
The children developed their cutting and sticking skills by making paper volcanoes. We also created eruption art by blowing paint and made our own eruptions with chemical reactions.
Friday - Colourful day
Everyone made their own rainbow sun catcher and learnt what a Zentangle is. We also enjoyed playing some Scatterball on the field.
Monday 4th to Friday 8th May
On Monday we started the week off with a Joe Wicks workout. After that, we completed our Get Epic reading, My Maths and timetable rock stars. For some creative fun, we made chalk graffiti names outside on the playground.
On Tuesday we started the day with some physical activity by playing cones and domes in the hall. Then we completed Mrs Hick’s writing task based on the video clip ‘Bubbles’. In the afternoon, we made some cotton bud paintings.
On Wednesday we started the day with some cosmic yoga and Get Epic reading. We then completed maths learning on the iPads and finished off the day by reading a story ‘The Rainbow Fish’. We then made our own paper plate rainbow fish using paints and celery to stamp on scales. Finally, we added some shiny tinfoil scales.
On Thursday we started the day off by playing some running games on the field. We then completed our Get Epic reading. After that, we read the story ‘Elmer’ and made our own milk bottle Elmer elephants. In the afternoon we helped Mrs Lansley to tidy up reading books and organise them into groups.
On Friday we looked at the assembly about VE day and discussed what it meant. Then we designed and iced our own cakes and created boxes to take them home. We used lego to make different boats and tested if they floated or not. Because it is a bank holiday we experimented with free painting too.
Monday 27th - Thursday 30th April
This week, the children of Free Arena have been doing lots of indoor activities as the weather outside has been a little bit rainy and horrible. In addition to our daily workouts with Joe Wicks, we have been doing some Yoga to relax our bodies. During the week we have managed to play some indoor badminton, create an animal habitat and start creating the new library by sorting and moving books! In addition, we have also used paper plates to create different animals and been building with Lego. Even though we have been indoors, it hasn't stopped us from having a great time!
Friday 24th April
We’ve had a lovely end to the first week of the summer term. We made an obstacle course on the field and built our own creations from junk modelling.
Wednesday 22nd April
Happy Earth day! Today at school we have been thinking about how to help the environment. The children decided to go on a litter pick around the school and they also researched and made fact files about endangered animals.
Tuesday 21st April
A ‘blooming’ lovely day of flower poetry, flower painting and flower science, alongside lots of PE.
Monday 20th April
Welcome back to the summer term! The children at school have settled back in nicely and have produced some lovely writing about their Easter. We then went for a nature walk looking for signs of spring (we saw lots!) and collecting items for a nature picture.
Wednesday 1st April
Happy April Fools Day! The children have been trying hard to play tricks on the teachers today. However, we have managed to find time to complete some Easter maths activities, followed by creating our very own board games and finishing off with an exciting scavenger hunt around the school.
Tuesday 31st March
After our morning work out we practiced our adding and subtracting with some emoji Maths. Then we used our stop motion skills from yesterday to make Easter videos which we are going to upload to The Pines YouTube channel! This afternoon we stretched out with some Star Wars cosmic yoga.
Monday 30th March
We said ‘Hi’ to Joe Wicks to begin Week 2 with a kickstart. Mrs Churchill was particularly good at her Thor sound effects this morning. The rest of the morning challenged both sides of our brain with a creative Spring inspired word cloud and a ‘Magic Square’ puzzle before trying dotty six (our best was 4 throws!) We played individually, but partner up at home! https://nrich.maths.org/7337
Friday 27th March
Happy Friday everyone! Today, the Free Arena started off once again with Joe Wicks and his work out, before completing a Maths mystery to find out who stole the chocolate from the factory! This afternoon we all went outside to cover the playground with chalk drawings. We wondered whether they would still be there on Monday?
We hope you have all had a safe week and have a relaxing weekend indoors.
Wednesday 25th March
We began again with some high energy exercise with Joe Wicks. Loved the Spider-Man and Karate Kid moves today. After this, we used Mr Men and Little Miss as our inspiration, creating our own family as the characters and designing a new one. We completed some time tables practise and enjoyed a little bit of hide and seek and the adventure playground. The children did a great job planting some beans in the allotment whilst in the afternoon we produced some beautiful spring paintings and enjoyed football in the ☀️!
Tuesday 24th March
Today started with PE with Joe Wicks, The Body Coach. Then we've practised times tables and/or addition skill with some maths colouring sheets, written part of a story so as a whole group we told the story of 'The Blue Umbrella' (based on the Pixar short film), solved a mystery using our grammar skills, taken photographs of flowers and plants to draw in class and gardened as a team. We ended with some Cosmic Yoga and a story. In our free time, we enjoyed a football match and a game of hide and seek.
Monday 23rd March
This morning the children have enjoyed a superhero treasure hunt and have been building bridges!
