Welcome to our class page. We hope you will find it useful and it will let you know what we are currently learning about in school.

Teacher bio:

My name is Mrs Drury and I have been a teacher here at The Pines for many years! I am very excited to be teaching in Year 5 Cedar class this year and cannot wait for all the fantastic discussion, fun and learning we will enjoy together.

I have a particular passion for reading, science and Disney! I can be found most evenings curled up on the sofa with a good book and so I am very happy to be recommended the next best thing to read.

Class Routines:

Our main classroom door for the start and end of the school day is next to gate C.

Classroom doors open at 8:40am and the school day ends at 3:10pm.

Our regular PE lessons are on Tuesday. On this, children should come to school wearing their PE kit. Jewellery will need to be removed for the session, or covered with tape.

Current Learning

This term, Year 5 will be exploring the Anglo-Saxons and trying to answer the question ‘What changes did the Anglo-Saxons bring to Britain?’ We will be looking at who the Anglo-Saxons were and why they chose to settle in Britain. We will also study artefacts from the period and use these to help us infer what daily life was like. Our class novel this term is The 1000 year old boy, which is linked to out history topic.

At the moment, we are particularly focusing on the following:

English: Writing lessons will be focused on the skills required to write non-chronological reports, biographies, effective descriptions in narrative writing as well as writing our own circular stories. We will explore cinquain poems.

Maths: We will be looking at place value initially, before moving on to look at the four calculations.

Science: In science, we will be exploring different materials and their properties. We will test a range of materials for their durability, absorbency and magnetic properties.

Art: In our art lessons, the children will be studying illuminated lettering, before creating their own typography styles.

PE: In our PE lessons, we will be developing skills related to rugby and netball.
