What is a School Council?     

A school council is a representative group of pupils elected by their peers to represent their views and raise issues with the senior managers and governors of their school. The school council can also take forward initiatives and projects on behalf of their peers, and be involved in strategic planning and development of the school.

School councils can help children and young people to:

• enjoy and feel empowered by their education;
• feel that their school responds to their needs;
• have the opportunity to let adults know their feelings and opinions about things that affect them;
• have a say about decisions, and to play an active role in making their school a better place;
• develop active life skills through participating.

Our School Council

We have a very successful School Council.  Our representatives, elected from Year 2 upwards, meet with their classes before and after each meeting of the Council. This gives everyone in each class the opportunity to let the Council representative have their views and ideas and for the representative to report back the outcomes of the meeting.

The Council provides the children with a valuable ‘citizenship’ experience.

 A recent successful idea was to ask for a new range of playtime equipment, which was provided by funds from Friends of The Pines.

Visitors are invited to Council meetings when appropriate. Governors are often invited to attend.

Councillors are elected a fresh every year. This provides every child the opportunity to apply should they be interested. They are invited to speak to their class, presenting why they think they would make an excellent candidate for councillor. The children in the class then act democratically, elected the person who they think will best represent them. These elections are completed through a secret ballot and the successful applicant announced in assembly.

All school councillors wear their badges with pride.
